You're Not Aligned With Your Values

The Achievement Code #18: What You Truly Value is Hiding in Plain Sight

Conscious Creator,

When the hear the word ‘value’, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

Many people immediately think of money.

But you’re not most people.

You wouldn’t be reading this if you were.

So, let me ask again: what does value truly mean to you?

Value

The truth is, value isn’t a fixed concept.

I can demonstrate this perfectly with my recent browsing history. I’m on the hunt for some new running shoes for Autumn season.

The exact same, identical pair of Hoka Clifton 9 running shoes is selling for £59.90 at Atrieve. Whereas, they’re selling at £55.90 at Kibertan.

That’s £4 difference for the exact same product.

As a consumer, my father would be furious about this.

But that would be based on his values.

The first store, Atrieve believes that someone will pay their price, and they probably will.

The second store, Kibertan believes the same thing.

This got me thinking about the work of John Demartini.

John Demartini

Dr John Demartini is one of the experts features in the famous film, The Secret, which is probably the most famous book/film on the law of attraction.

If you’ve never seen The Secret, it’s is available on youtube here.

John argues in his work that values are the driving force behind everything that we do.

He explains this by looking at how our brains are structured.

While the brain is incredibly complex, we only need to focus on two key areas for this:

  1. The prefrontal cortex

This is our brain’s “executive centre”, responsible for strategy planning, objectivity and achieving our goals (pretty handy for a newsletter titled The Achievement Code).

When we live in alignment with our highest values, blood flow, glucose and oxygen increase in this area, activating our executive functions and fostering feelings of inspiration, fulfilment and self-governance.

I hope you experience this regularly.

  1. The subcortical region

This area is closer to the spinal cord, where we feel more.

When we act based on lower, less important values, our focus shifts here.

This is our ‘animal survival brain’ where we tend to have more polarised perceptions and experience emotional volatility and frustration.

Back to values

Humans have the most developed prefrontal cortex of all mammal species in proportion to the rest of the brain.

This unique brain structure means we are driven by both our animal needs and our higher-level cognitive functions.

We can use our higher-level thinking to articulate our desires in writing and then act accordingly. This is a capability other species don't have.

To put it lightly, we feel at the subcortical &

We know at the prefrontal.

And that’s where Dr John Demartini’s 13 Question, Demartini Value Determination Process comes into play.

The Demartini Value Determination Process

Essentially, this is a series of 13 questions designed to encourage this higher-level thinking about what truly matters to us

Here’s the first question as an example.

Let’s use a picture of my desk (& my writing setup) as an example

My desk at home

These 3 things stood out for me:

  1. Public speaking and running trophies

  2. Laptop

  3. Notebooks (on the window sill) & desk

Finding Clues

We leave clues about what we value everywhere.

For me, my trophies represent a sense of achievement and the acknowledgment of my dedication.

My laptop symbolises my ability to work and connect with others.

And my notebooks are tools that help me clarify my thoughts and access that higher-level thinking.

I think these serve as excellent reminders about what’s important to us.

Acknowledging these physical clues is an excellent way to remind ourselves of what’s truly important.

By intentionally surrounding ourselves with what we value, we can create a self-fulfilling prophecy that taps into our highest cognitive functions and inspires us to do more of what we love.

The Code: Tidy Your Room

This week, take a little time to tidy your room, or another space that’s important to you.

Is your room setup to reflect what you value?

If so, why not try arranging it so it does?
